City opens pools and cooling centers to fight heat wave

WASHINGTON -- In response to the higher than average temperatures forecast for the weekend, the DC government will open four cooling centers and 18 outdoor swimming pools across the city.

Fairfax and Montgomery Counties are also taking similar measures.

The cooling centers in DC will operate from 12 pm to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8, 2008, at the following locations:

William Rumsey Aquatic Center, 635 North Carolina Avenue, SE
Takoma Aquatic Center, 300 Van Buren Street, NW
Brentwood Recreation Center, 2311 14th Street, NE
Barry Farm Recreation Center, 1230 Sumner Road, SE

Cooling centers in Fairfax County will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Cub Run and Providence RECenters. Those who need transportation should call the center directly

Montgomery County will keep all seven County pools open on Saturday and Sunday until 8 p.m. to help residents cope with continued power outages and this weekend's heat wave. The pools normally close at 6 p.m. on weekends. County officials are encouraging residents to cool off by going to libraries, community centers, malls, movie theaters or other air-conditioned locations open to the public. Pool locations include:
