The discovery of bacteria levels that exceeded state standards has prompted the second no-swimming advisory in two weeks. The city health department issued an advisory Wednesday for waters between 71st and 83th streets.
The first warning of the swimming season came May 17, discouraging people from swimming and wading in the waters from 54th to 71st streets because of increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness and skin, eye and respiratory infections. At the time, the higher-than-usual levels were attributed to rainfall and storm water runoff.
