Flu Outbreak at U-Md. Worst in 10 Years

February 13, 2008 - 8:02am
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Officials at the University of Maryland are calling a flu outbreak there the worst in 10 years.

More than 400 students have been diagnosed with the flu on campus, and more cases are being reported.

A doctor at the university's health center says students who come in within 24 hours of the onset of the flu can be given an antiviral medication that can lessen the length and severity of the symptoms.

Health officials also recommend fluids, rest and over-the-counter cold medicine.

Students at the university can get flu shots at the health center for a small fee.

Maryland isn't the only school where flu problems have been reported. Last week, the University of Virginia reported a large flu outbreak.
