Strip Clubs Sue to Block New Rules

August 31, 2006 - 8:36am
GREENBELT, Md. - Three strip clubs in Prince George's County have filed a federal lawsuit hoping to void new restrictions that are scheduled to go into effect Thursday.

The lawsuit filed by Showcase Theater in Beltsville and two other clubs says the regulations -- including one that forbids dancers from mingling with patrons -- are "seriously burdensome restrictions" that aren't imposed on other businesses like taverns, nightclubs and theaters.

Other new rules say dancers must be on stages at least 18 inches high and performances must also be at least six feet from customers.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and recovery of legal fees.

Luke Lirot, an attorney for the clubs, says the restrictions, which were enacted by the county in 2003, shouldn't be enforced until it is determined if they are constitutional.
