Did He Do That?

November 6, 2009 - 12:00am
An e-mail from a WTOP listener brought up an interesting point about renting a car.

He rented a car for one day. When the vehicle was returned later that day; the rental company representative pointed out a small ding on the top of the left wheel cover and told the consumer he would have to pay for the repair. Our listener wanted to know if he could find out if the repair was actually done since he had paid for it.

We made several suggestions, but also told him that the company could take his money and choose to not do the repairs.

Beyond this issue, it is important to note that some rental companies are rather lax about inspecting the vehicle when you rent it, but go over it with a fine tooth comb when you return it. The best protection for consumers, check the car very carefully, and make sure every ding, no matter how small is indicated on the rental agreement.
