A WTOP Call For Action Volunteer and a friend were taking Metro to a downtown art gallery. As they boarded the train, the doors began to close and they just made it into the car, but the volunteer's handbag was trapped in the doors.

Unfortunately, the Metro car doors do not operate like elevator doors and open when there is an obstruction. What would happen if someone, especially a child were caught in the closing doors? Not a pleasant prospect.

Metro is going to pay to have her handbag repaired. But the bigger concern is the safety issue. Our volunteer also learned the car she used, a 1100 series, is one of the oldest cars in the Metro fleet and has had some serious safety issues. A recent Washington Examiner article pointed out the many problems.
