Don't Forget to Get it in Writing

November 11, 2009 - 12:00am
Two days after renting the car, the transmission decided to go on strike. He returned the car and got another vehicle. Was that the end of the story?

It was not. A few days after he returned from his trip, he got a call asking him to fill out an incident report about what happened. He said, "Nothing happened, the car just stopped running."

The next thing he heard from the rental company was that he was being sent a $50 voucher because of the mechanical failure of the car. End of the matter? Not quite.

Two months later, he got a letter asking him to pay $2,600 for damage to the car. He refused. The company sent a second letter saying that the matter would be turned over to a collection agency if he did not pay up.

The lesson here is never, ever, leave a rental car that has had a mechanical failure without getting a document from the rental company saying that it was mechanical failure and not an accident.
