For many of us, even when we travel, our e-mails are never far behind. One listener checked her e-mail while away, and was alarmed to discover a notice from her bank stating that her account was over her credit limit and she should contact the bank immediately.
Using the phone number provided in the e-mail, she called and was asked for her social security number in order to access her account. At first she refused, but the woman on the phone told her the number was needed before the problem could be corrected. Pam gave her the information. Then, she had second thoughts and contacted us in a bit of a panic.
Unfortunately, the e-mail really looked legit. If I weren't aware of phishing I would have believed it was authentic. We provided her with information on identity theft.
