Second Set of Cheetahs Goes on Display

June 24, 2005 - 5:53am
WASHINGTON - It's cheetah time again at the National Zoo.

"We went 115 years at the zoo without having a litter of cheetah cubs," says zoo spokesman John Gibbons.

Now the zoo has two litters, the second of which goes on display Saturday.

The newest litter was born April 14. Their mom Zazi, which means "fertile" or "fruitful" in Swahili lived up to her name.

"We have two males and three females being watched over by their mom Zazi. She's a 4-year-old and this is her first litter," Gibbons says.

"The cubs' father is also on display but he's not with the cubs or Zazi. Just like in the wild, the male has nothing to do with the upbringing of the young."

The 10-week-old cubs cubs and Zazi will be on public display from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday. After Saturday, you'll be able to see them from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Of course, you also can see the other litter of cubs. Those cubs are now 7 months old and quite agile. They're exercising with an agility course at the zoo that lets them run up to 40-miles-per-hour.
